Eridania Ossuccio

Eridania Ossuccio was a city in the northwest of the Eridania quadrangle on Mars. It was destroyed by an Earth Federation nuclear strike during the Second Martian-Terran War.

Etymology

Eridania Ossuccio's name is derived from the municipality of Ossuccio along the shore of Lake Como in northern Italy. The Eridania region of Mars is home to a wealth of evidence of ancient water, including gullies and a suspected lake basin. As such, many features were named for Italian and ancient Mediterranean lakes and ports during the initial phase of exploration and colonization on Mars.

History

Destruction

On the morning of November 4th, 2577, the EFSF bombed Eridania Ossuccio with a nuclear weapon, destroying it. Due to its modest size and civilian industry the MSD did not believe that the city would be a primary target. The motive behind this strike remains unknown.

Geography

Eridania Ossuccio was situated in a shallow crater at 128.051754°‎, -38.691168° between the larger Arrhenius and Pursat. The closest spaceport is Gallia, located on the Hesperia Planum not far to the northwest.

Demographics

At its height, Eridania Ossuccio had a population of approximately 80,000.
